Scott Hamilton, Alan Barnes and the Dave Newton Trio

Scott Hamilton Tonight some superb jazz musicians will combine to make wonderful music to dispel, for a while, the January gloom.

We welcome the American tenor sax legend Scott Hamilton, Alan Barnes, alto and baritone sax and the trio of the pianist Dave Newton which includes Steve Brown on drums and Andy Cleyndert on double bass. Alan Barnes and the Dave Newton trio have both played at the Castle recently, but this is Scott Hamilton's first visit

The Geoff Pearson Quartet

Geoff Pearson Bassist, Geoff Pearson, has played with many US jazz giants, such as Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin, and Scott Hamilton, as well as UK jazz greats and 'Castle favourites' such as Jim Mullen, Dave O'Higgins and Alan Barnes.

He is a renowned bassist who has played at most of the major UK jazz festivals and is one of the most in-demand musicians. His Quartet can be relied upon to play accessible, versatile, eclectic and vibrant contemporary jazz.

The Kit Downes Quintet

Kit Downes Pianist and composer, Kit Downes, exploded onto the British Jazz Scene by winning the BBC Jazz Award for Rising Star in 2008, and a British Jazz Award in 2010.

He then formed his trio of award-winning bassist, Calum Gourlay, and rising drum star, James Maddren. The trio's debut album Golden was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize. Tonight, the trio has expanded into a Quintet and includes James Allsopp, bass clarinet and tenor saxophone, and Lucy Railton, cello. The band has spent some time developing its personal sound, using melody, inspired from a range of sources ranging from Bela Bartok to Bill Frisell. The band has an engaging sound that does not sacrifice its integrity.

Geoff Eales and Isorhythm

Geoff Eales Geoff Eales is regarded as one of Europe's most inspirational pianists and composers.He is fluent in many musical languages; blues, bebop, swing, ragtime, gospel, latin, fusion, classical, the avant-garde and more. It is in the realm of jazz and improvised music that the full extent of Geoff's musical personality is revealed.

Geoff's musical journey began in South Wales Valleys when his jazz-loving father taught him to play the twelve bar blues, at the age of eight. He studied music at Cardiff University, and after, his MA, specialised in composition. Geoff then decided to broaden his horizons and toured the world as a ship's musician, absorbing the music of many different cultures, which had tremendous influence on his later work.
